Multiply Your Impact: Why Giving Through a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF) Matters

“Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.” 2 Corinthians 9:10-11

When we steward what God has given us faithfully, He multiplies it for greater impact. At Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County (UGM-TC), we are grateful for the many generous hearts who support our mission to provide Hope, Respect, and New Beginnings to our unsheltered neighbors through discipleship and the transformational love of Christ. In celebration of Donor Advised Fund Awareness Week (August 18-22), we want to highlight a powerful and increasingly popular way to give: through a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF).

A DAF is like a charitable investment account. You make a contribution (cash, stocks, real estate, or other assets) to a public charity that sponsors DAFs (such as Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, or a local community foundation), receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants from that fund over time to the charities you care about — like UGM-TC.

Think of it as a charitable giving account with flexibility:

  • You contribute now, get tax benefits, and recommend grants on your own timeline.
  • Funds inside the DAF can grow tax-free, potentially increasing the total impact you can make.
  • You can support multiple organizations from one account, making your giving organized and simple.
  • Be sure to assign a beneficiary to your DAF, ensuring that your legacy continues to impact the communities you care about.
  • Beneficiaries can be individuals or organizations, like your favorite nonprofit.

To get started giving through a DAF:

  1. Choose a sponsoring organization (Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, National Philanthropic Trust, or a local foundation).
  2. Open your DAF account with an initial contribution — this can be cash, appreciated stocks, mutual funds, or even complex assets like private business interests.
  3. Take an immediate tax deduction in the year of your contribution.
  4. Recommend grants to your favorite nonprofits (like UGM-TC!) over time, using the online portal or mobile tools provided by your sponsor.

When you support Union Gospel Mission of Tarrant County through your DAF, you help us provide safe shelter and warm meals every day and offer transformational recovery programs for men, women, and children.
